Ring Video Doorbells are great pieces of kit for monitoring the front or back of your home.
Not only do they allow you to open the door when you’re not home, but they will also detect motion and alert you if something doesn’t seem right.
If, like us, you have your Ring Video Doorbell in the front of your house and you have a sidewalk in front of it, you might want to consider setting up camera motion zones to make sure that when those alerts arrive they’re actually helpful, rather than just someone walking around your house.
We have a separate feature for setting up privacy zones on your Ring device as well as adjusting your motion settings, but here we’re talking about how to set up camera motion zones on your Ring Video Doorbell and Ring Camera.
what you will need
- A smartphone or tablet
- The Ring app
- Your Ring video doorbell
The short version
- Open the Ring application.
- Find your Ring Video Doorbell.
- Touch ‘Motion Settings‘.
- Touch ‘Camera movement zones‘.
- Touch ‘Add motion zone‘.
- Create your area.
- Rename Area and press done.
- Press ‘Save‘ at the top right.
Ring has several different ways to filter motion settings. If you have a compatible device, you can set up Bird’s Eye Zones, while Smart Alerts allows you to receive motion alerts and recordings of the alerts you want, such as people or packages. However, they do require a Ring Protect subscription, so it’s worth keeping that in mind.
When it comes to camera motion zones, these allow you to draw an area within the field of view of your Ring Video Doorbell (or Ring camera), specifying where you want the device to observe motion.
If you set up Camera Motion Zones, your Ring device will only detect motion within these areas and ignore things like the sidewalk or a bush that can fly around when it’s windy and trigger false motion alerts.
That’s all. Everything done. Your Ring device will now only alert you when motion is detected in that area.
Frequently asked questions
You practically follow the same steps as to configure as Camera Motion Zone. When you open Camera Motion Zones, you’ll need to tap ‘Edit Zone’ and then ‘Delete Zone’ to get rid of a zone.
When you set up camera motion zones, you will only be notified of motion that occurs within that zone. Video recording will still occur around the Camera Motion Zone, so if you don’t want that to happen, set up a Privacy Zone.
