Dell was mocked in its own press release for copying Apple’s iPhone naming convention onto its PCs. Currently, both laptop and desktop PCs are divided into three tiers, the names of which are taken straight from the iPhone lineup: Dell, Dell Pro, and Dell Pro Max.

Despite claiming to have done this purely for simplicity and not to imitate Apple, Dell has actually managed to make its PC lineup even more confusing than before…

bloomberg reports that Dell will be abandoning its own sub-brands like XPS and Inspiron in favor of a new naming convention.

Currently, most of the company’s new PCs are divided into three tiers: Dell, Dell Pro, and Dell Pro Max (…)

“Customers really like names that are easy to remember and pronounce,” Chief Operating Officer Jeff Clark said in a briefing with reporters ahead of the show. Buyers don’t have to spend time “understanding our nomenclature, which can sometimes be a little confusing,” he said.

If Dell was hoping that no one would notice where these names came from, they were disappointed.

“I wonder why you guys didn’t choose the original one, because there’s essentially Apple branding here,” quipped one audience member. Another said, “Your branding looks a lot like Apple. Aren’t you just following Apple?”

The new tier doesn’t make things easier for buyers. All three The levels are further divided into Base, Plus, and Premium variants. Is Pro Plus better than Pro Max Base? What about Pro Premium and Pro Max Plus?

Engadget They point out that when Dell also throws in size labels for desktop PCs, things turn into a complete farce.

Try reading the names Dell Pro Max Micro and Dell Pro Max Mini so your brain doesn’t self-destruct (…) And yes, we expect these machines to come with their own Plus and Premium sub-brands can.

Yes, the Dell Pro Max Micro Plus is indeed coming.

This is worse than Apple’s Mac model names from the 1990s (Macintosh IIvx, Macintosh Centris/Quadra 610, PowerBook Duo 280c, etc.) before Steve came back and scrapped everything.
