With the M4 Mac lineup, Apple will be doing something it hasn’t done in over a decade.

Assuming the rumors are true, it looks like Apple will be updating all Macs with M4 chips for the first time in forever. I’ve been close to this several times, but never in at least the last 10 years.

Earlier this fall, Apple announced the first M4-powered Macs, the MacBook Pro, iMac, and Mac mini. There were a number of notable upgrades, including more (and faster) Thunderbolt ports, nanotexture display options, and Center Stage camera upgrades.

These updates covered most of the Mac lineup, leaving only the MacBook Air, Mac Studio, and Mac Pro. MacBook Air is scheduled to receive the M4 in the spring, while Mac Studio and Mac Pro are expected to receive it by mid-2025, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Garman. So assuming that’s the case, all Macs in the lineup will be up to date.

Past Mac updates

It’s not often that every Mac in the lineup is kept up to date. We’re pretty close to M1, and almost every Mac except the Mac Pro has received M1 for about 18 months. In fact, the Mac Pro doesn’t get updated that often, so you should use that as your primary metric.

The Mac Pro’s last refresh was in 2023 with the M2 Ultra. Most Macs now feature M2 family chips, starting with the MacBook Air and 13-inch MacBook Pro at WWDC22, Mac mini and MacBook Pro following in January 2023, and Mac Studio and Mac Pro ending at WWDC23. However, the M2 never refreshed the iMac, creating an incomplete cycle.

Fast forward to 2019, when we first got a look at the current Mac Pro design. This was also a year in which Apple refreshed most of its Macs, with the iMac (both sizes) launching at the beginning of the year, the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro joining in mid-year, and the all-new 16-inch MacBook Pro followed by the Mac Pro. It was announced towards the end of the year. End of the year.

However, there was no refresh of the iMac Pro or Mac mini, making 2019 another incomplete cycle. Even if you count the Mac mini that year, it was pretty late in 2018, so the lack of an iMac Pro refresh would render the Mac mini obsolete.

I could go into more detail, but I’ll keep it simple. The last time all Macs were updated on a 12-month cycle was in 2013, when Apple introduced the trash Mac Pro and within a year also updated the MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, iMac, and Mac mini.

summary

So, assuming the rumors are true, the M4 will be Apple’s first complete Mac refresh in over a decade. The MacBook Air seems like a lock, but so do the Mac Studio and Mac Pro. Let’s hope Apple doesn’t change its plans. If we do that, we should become gold.
