Shop E Store You don’t need to be at Super Bowl Stadium to be exposed to a lot of noise during the game. A new Apple Watch survey found that noise levels across the US were significantly higher than usual in around nine hours on Super Bowl Sunday.
On average, across the US, you can be exposed to noise levels between 1.5 and 3 decibels than usual.
I expect things to get pretty big in the stadium during the Super Bowl, but on game day things get pretty loud no matter where you are.
A study by Apple Hearing, a collaboration between the University of Michigan and Apple, learns about noise exposure using the Apple Watch noise app worn by over 115,000 volunteers. In this particular study, researchers wanted to know if the US noise levels were high during major events, even if you weren’t near the location.
Noise levels were analyzed in the past four Super Bowls (2021, 2022, 2023, and 2024). We looked at the average noise levels 6 hours before and 6 hours after the start of the Super Bowl Sunday game and compared it to the noise levels simultaneously the following Sunday (…)
On average, across the US, there was an increase in noise levels for participants during the last four Super Bowl games by about 1.5-3 decibels compared to post-match Sunday levels. The 2021-2024 Super Bowl average (show) This increase began about three hours before the game began and lasted about three hours after the game ended.
It doesn’t sound like much, but since decibels are measured on a logarithmic scale, an increase of 3dB represents twice the energy of the sound.
The problem is that our ears do not perceive it like this. Therefore, we may be exposed to potentially harmful levels of noise without realizing it. The university recommends using the noise app on your Apple Watch to monitor exposure and use earphones and earphones with noise cancellation when participating in noisy events.
