Apple today announced that it will be able to sell the iPad app from September 16th at the EU’s third-party app store.

This follows the introduction of an alternative App Store for iPhones in the block. Five of these are now available…

A brief summary

The European Digital Markets Act (DMA) antitrust law has designated many high-tech companies as “gatekeepers.” That is, it is strong enough to use market control to stop competition.

As Apple had a monopoly on selling iPhone apps, some were designated gatekeepers and were told they needed to be able to buy and sell iPhone apps outside their own App Store. The company follows and currently has five alternative app stores for iPhone apps.

iPad 3rd Party App Store

The iPad is a small market, but the EU said it has enough lock-in effect to include it. Apple today introduced developers to review apps that allow third-party iOS app sales to include iPados.

From September 16th:

  • EU users can download the iPados app through the App Store and alternative distributions. As mentioned in May, if you enter an alternative terms and conditions supplement for the EU app, the first annual installation of iPads will start to occur, and the App Store Commission’s low fees will apply.
  • Alternate browser engines are available in the iPados app.

The notarization mentions are because Apple must review and approve apps for security purposes before they can be sold in other app stores.
