There are many focuses on iPhone changes, but there are very important reasons why the Macos 16 can prove to be just as important. The ultimate in touchscreen Macs may be the best evidence.
The first touchscreen Mac may arrive next year, and WWDC
Apple shipped iPhones using MultiTouch in 2007. I followed up my iPad in 2010. Bringing Touch to your Mac has been a constant issue ever since.
Apple executives regularly shoot down ideas. But as history proves, Apple can vehemently deny something just by secretly working on it behind the scenes.
But so many times have passed. Touch has long been the standard for PCs, but there is no touchscreen mac yet.
However, if you leave the MacOS 16 a little away, the 2026 MacBook Pro sounds like it’s the best chance for it to change.
This is because it is expected to boast a thinner, lighter and more redesigned major hardware using OLED, M6 chip lines, and in some cases C1 or C2 modems.
The history of rumors about this model indicates that touch support may be an important feature.
We’ve been more than 18 months away from the launch of that new MacBook Pro. But thanks to Apple’s upcoming software updates, there’s no need to wait that long to discover whether smoke on a touchscreen Mac really means fire.
MacOS 16 either strongly suggests a touchscreen Mac or puts an end to our wishes
I remember when the Macos Big Sur redesign sparked a wave of excitement that a Touch With Touch Mac could come.
At the time, executives like Craig Federighi suggested that users were reading too much about some small design adjustments.
However, when MacOS 16 was introduced in June this year in just three months, I am hoping for a different scenario.
Big Sur made the Macs a bit touch-friendly, but if Apple really plans to launch its first touchscreen Mac soon, the Macs 16 will almost certainly make it clear.
One of two things happens. Either:
- MacOS16 has a major change that makes touchscreen Macs seem obvious
- Or it’s not, and we can give up hope for a touchscreen MacBook Pro next year or anytime
In the second scenario, you might say that usually there is always a macos 17.
But if the MacOS 16 is getting a major redesign, is it really plausible that Apple will make big changes again on MacOS 17?
If the touchscreen Mac is really coming, the clues should be revealed in June. If not, you should know after WWDC.
In any case, we hope that the MacOS 16 will provide much needed clarity for Apple’s current touchscreen Mac plans.
