Why does Apple TV+ exist? This new report may provide clues
Since Apple TV+ was first launched, many have wondered whether iPhone manufacturers are interested in running their own Hollywood studios and major streaming services. Even the CEO of Netflix is confused. However, there may be some clues in the new chart outlining Apple TV+ subscribers’ product ownership.
Research shows that Apple TV+ subscribers own more Apple products
Michael Levin and Josh Lotz wrote in CIRP:
Apple TV+ subscribers seem likely to own more Apple products. Based on data for the 12 months ending in December 2024, a third of customers who purchased a new device from Apple from Apple prior to the survey have Apple TV+. These Apple TV+ users own more Apple devices. We’ll look at three main products: iPhone, iPad and Mac computers. Half of Apple TV+ users own all three, compared to about a third of Apple customers who don’t use Apple TV+.
Even better (for Apple), only 13% of Apple TV+ subscribers own only one of the three main products, but almost a quarter of customers who don’t subscribe to Apple TV+.
The chart below shows the breakdown of Apple TV+ subscribers and non-subscribers, as well as the number of Apple devices each group owns.
Deciphering the data
Of course, the big question about this chart is, “Why?”
Why are Apple TV+ subscribers more likely to own more Apple products?
- Is that because people who own more products can afford more streaming services?
- Is it a halo effect of loving Apple products that translates into actively watching TV efforts?
- Are more device owners just more perceived that TV+ exists?
- Or is Apple TV+ somehow leading users to buy more Apple products?
It is impossible to answer these questions without any further data.
That said, regardless of what the answer is, this report appears to show a positive trend regardless of Apple.
Whatever the mix of causes and effects that Apple products and services like TV+ have with each other, Apple is the winner in the end.
