AppleTV+ is really beginning to gain the reputation of “new HBO”
Apple TV+ has been having a particularly good year. Resignation was a mainstream hit, and somehow it surpassed Ted Lasso’s success. Apple’s follow-through on the show after the show was particularly strong, as the streamer had missed a bunch of other important hits as well. After being called “the new HBO” for many years, I think Apple TV+ may have finally begun to gain that reputation.
As Apple quickly learned, creating the next HBO is not easy
When Apple TV+ first debuted in 2019, Apple promoted it as “the new home of the world’s most creative storytellers.” Prestige was my goal from the start.
Apple’s Service Head Eddy Queue should do this in an early Apple TV+ press release.
“Apple TV+ will be home to some of the highest quality original storytelling that television and film enthusiasts still see.”
The streamer was famous or infamous on November 1, 2019, and has only become famous for nine titles available to subscribers. There is no library of content, only original shows and movies.
Apple’s content goals were clear. It’s the best, not the most.
The launch lineup includes:
Top For each of the Apple TV+ executives, Zack Van Amburg:
“With Apple TV+, you’re introducing all-original stories from the best, brightest, most creative. You know that viewers will find new favorite shows and movies on our service.”
Unfortunately, the launch slate did not prove to be as convincing to critics and viewers as Apple had hoped.
The reviews were not entirely bad, but they weren’t positive enough to withstand Apple’s hype.
Apple TV+ wanted to be the new HBO with Prestige content, but it stumbled from the gate.
Apple TV+ has finally achieved its “HBO level” fame
For most of its five-plus-year run, Apple TV+ claims to be higher than the average hit rate for new shows and movies. This means that you mainly create high quality content.
But until recently, it still struggles in two areas.
- Consistency
- amount
Apple TV+ has made some really great shows. It also made a significant share of the expensive yet mediocre show. Consistency was a challenge.
Even if the Apple show is successful, it’s usually one at a time. As a longtime subscriber, Apple TV+ rarely aired multiple series I care about at once.
However, for almost a year, streamers have improved in both ways.
- Apple TV+ has been making top tier shows debuts one after another since at least last summer.
- And for the time being, it was running multiple persuasive shows at once
In his retirement, the studio and dope thief were very strong follow-ups to get subscribers hooked. And your friends and neighbors of John Hamm are here next week.
All this says: I think the “New HBO” title is beginning to fit very well with Apple TV+.
Apple needs to maintain a strong hit rate and prove that the last year hasn’t been a vampire.
But now? Apple TV+ is very similar to the new HBO for me.
Apple TV+ is available for $9.99 a month and features TV shows and movies such as Ted Lasso, Severance, Morning Show, Silos and Shrinks. You can also watch it for free in several ways.
