Apple first introduced Space Grey as Space Color in 2013, using the iPhone 5s, replacing the Slate iPhone 5.
Space Gray came onto Macs in 2015 with a 12-inch MacBook.
Apple added Space Grey to its MacBook Pro line a year later, and redesigned the MacBook Air in 2018, including the Space Grey option.
Apple later sold the IMAC Pro only on Space Grey. On the last Intel Mac Mini desktop, Apple sold a high-end model with Space Grey.
Using the M4 MacBook Pro, Apple dropped Space Grey from the MacBook Pro Line in favor of Space Black.
Apple also used Space Grey to describe the original HomePod, HomePod Mini and AirPods Max. More recently, the Space Grey version has been replaced in the middle of the night.
Last year, Apple replaced the Space Grey M2 iPad Pro with the Space Black M4 iPad Pro. A few years ago, the iPad 10 dropped space grey from its base model iPad in favor of silver, blue, yellow and pink.
For now, Apple is only available in two space-gray products: the M3 iPad Air, which was introduced yesterday, and the A17 Pro iPad Mini, which was introduced last fall.
Space Black, Jet Black, Midnight and Just Black have replaced the Space Grey versions of Mac, iPhone, Apple Watch, AirPods Max, HomePod and HomePod Mini.
If there’s one thing about Apple’s Space Grey colour, it’s that there was actually no one true space grey. Michael Steeleber mapped Space Grey’s vast universe in 2018.
Space greys can look silverer than greys. Even today, depending on the lighting conditions, Space Black can be easily mistaken for Space Gray. Anyway, the Peak Space Grey era appears to be behind us in favor of a darker future.
