As someone who has been using the iPad Pro as their main computer for about seven years, I know how magical the accessory experience can be. When Apple introduced the magic keyboard to the iPad, I was adored by its design and functionality, transforming the iPad into a complete computer experience. However, for $350, the new iPad is more expensive than the 11th century. So I’ve always been looking for cheaper alternatives and ended up finding a magic keyboard and apple pencil alternative that exceeded my expectations. Let’s talk about them.

Before you begin, be sure to check out our latest videos on building your ultimate budget iPad Air Experience. Among them, we will practice both the ESR rebound keyboard case and its geopencil.

I’ve been testing magic keyboard alternatives over the years, and some are good and really not very good. However, one of the hardest to replicate is the trackpad experience. Third-party companies need to rely on Bluetooth IAS as opposed to iPad pin connectors, providing customers with a cohesive experience. So the trackpad experience is always a hit or miss. However, the new ESR rebound case is the closest I’ve personally experienced compared to the real thing! Gesture control and action is always the toughest, and ESR has nailed it with this! Here are some of the specifications:

  • Floating cantilever design: Adjustable angle and magnetically mounted
  • Function keys: Includes media, volume, and brightness controls.
  • Backlight key: 3 brightness levels and 7 backlight colors
  • Multi-touch trackpad: Full iPados gesture support.
  • Bluetooth connection: If you pair it to your iPad once, the automatic pair will be displayed after that
  • lightweight: Weight is 610g
  • Apple Pencil Protection: Magnetic flaps to help keep your apple pencil in place
  • battery: Fees via USB-C, 3 months use without backlight, 2 weeks use with backlight

My experience

After writing, editing and navigating through iPados for a few days, I barely missed the magic keyboard. The keys are responsive, the trackpad is accurate, and the adjustable viewing angle feels like a true laptop replacement. So for just $79, if you don’t want your hinge to have a USB-C port to charge your iPad, and you don’t need to charge your keyboard every month, this is insane value. It’s over $200 cheaper than what Apple offers!

The Apple Pencil is another great, yet very expensive apple accessory. Apple is currently charging $130 for the Apple Pencil Pro and $80 for the Apple Pencil USB-C. But the good news is that the third-party apple pencil market is matured well and you can get some insane value from other brands. The Geo Pencil brings a lot for just $25! Here are some of the best features:

  • Find my support: Integrated tracking via Apple finds my app.
  • Slope sensitivity: Natural sketches and handwriting.
  • Palm Rejection: Works perfectly with Notebooks and Art Apps.
  • Magnetic: Snap to the iPad (but does not charge)
  • USB-C charging: Fees via USB-C
  • Shortcuts: Mapable shortcuts to open and close apps in Geo Pencil’s “Eraser” end

My experience

I took notes, used an appel pencil as a very rough sketch, signature document, and finger extension, and the geopencil is perfect. I am not an artist. I will never use squeeze functions, hover or anything that requires such things. We recommend Pencil Pro if you are actually a professional who needs those niche features. Otherwise, Geo Pencil earns 95% of your experience at a cost of five-fifths! Also, finding my support is nice!

Pricing and availability

Both keyboards and pencils are available today at Amazon and ESR stores. There are all different iPad models and sizes of keyboard versions. The Geo Pencil works on all modern iPads too! The ESR Rebound Magnetic Keyboard Case is $79, while the Geo Pencil is $25

These products are recommended to most iPad users as 98% of Apple iPads offer an experience at a fraction of the cost. For example, you can get the new iPad Air M3 for $549, the ESR keyboard for $79, and the Geo Pencil for $25. The total is about $650. Alternatively, you can go through Apple and spend $599 on the same iPad, $269 on the new iPad Air Magic keyboard, and $129 on the Pencil Pro. So, unless you need hover support or squeeze gestures from Pencil Pro, save your hard-earned money.
