Fortnite returns to the iPhone and iPad App Store in all countries – in one condition
Tim Sweeney, founder and CEO of Epic Games, announced that the company will submit Fortnite to the iOS App Store in the US next week. The move follows a court decision opposed Apple’s App Store practices. However, it’s not yet certain that Fortnite’s return…
“Next week we’ll be bringing Fortnite back to the US iOS App Store,” announced Epic CEO Tim Sweeney, adding that he’s ready to end all legal battles with Apple over its App Store policy.
“Epic presents a proposal for peace,” Sweeney wrote on social media. “If Apple extends Apple’s frictionless, Apple-Tax-free framework around the world, we’ll bring Fortnite back to the App Store globally and remove all current and future lawsuits.”
The changes that the epic game would like to see are: Fortnite does not allow iPhone and iPad users to purchase V-Bucks game currency via the iOS app. Instead, Epic will inform players that V-Bucks can be purchased from the Epic website. The EPIC can include links to websites where you can purchase V-Bucks, and Apple is not commissioned for online transactions.
That sounds simple enough, but Apple has been fighting for years to allow this simple scenario. Apple charges 15-30% of developers on digital transactions within the iPhone and iPad apps. In the US, Apple does not allow third-party markets to exist either.
Apple will need to allow Fortnite to function as mentioned above in the US following today’s court decision, but Sweeney puts “global” conditions on the proposal.
Fortnite has been missing from the App Store since 2020, when Epic Games broke existing App Store policies by allowing players to purchase game currency without using the App Store payment system. Apple pulled Fortnite from the App Store and Epic Games was sued, but now the results have arrived in the form of Apple’s big losses.
The game remains playable through cloud streaming platforms such as Nvidia Geforce Now and Xbox Cloud Gaming via browser, but the native Fortnite app has not been available on iPhone, iPad or Mac for years.
