Jony Ive and Laurene Powell’s work acknowledge the “dark” side of technology in a joint interview
Jony Ive and Laurene Powell’s Jobs (founder and president of Emerson Collective, and widow of Steve) acknowledge that the iPhone plays a role in the “dark” side of technology.
Ive also says that his mysterious hardware AI devices wouldn’t happen without Powell’s support and investment in his work…
More than a year ago, I heard that Jony Ive and Sam Altman were seeking $1 billion to raise funds for the device and were in investment talks with Powell Jobs. It was noted that the entrepreneurs and philanthropists of the time were close friends with both Ive and Altman, and that they had known them for decades.
Given that they participated in the joint, those lectures seem to have been successful. Financial Times At least an interview to hint at it. Ive said his whole company wouldn’t have happened without her support.
Powell Jobs, who owns Atlantic Magazine and has charity alongside investments in health, education and fintech companies, supported Love after leaving Ive in 2019.
The pair acknowledge that there is a “dark” side to technology like smartphones.
Powell Jobs believes that technology can be an eternal force, but “people are still animated” by the idea of adding warnings. “We now clearly know that certain types of technology have dark uses. We can see research that is being done solely on the rise of anxiety and mental health needs among teenage girls and young people.
I agree. “If you make something new, if you innovate, the results are unexpected, some are great, some are harmful,” he acknowledges his own role in products that have changed their relationship with technology. “Some of the less positive outcomes were not intentional, but I still feel responsible, and the manifestation of it is a determination to try to be useful.”
Neither gives anything about the nature of the new hardware, but Powell Jobs implies that it doesn’t compete directly with Apple’s current product lineup, or at least that she doesn’t want.
“I’m still very close to Apple’s leadership team. They’re really good people and I want them to succeed too.”
Ive said the new project rekindled his optimism about technology.
