Approximately 11,000 feet of climber were rescued this week in the Colorado wilderness thanks to Apple’s emergency SOS satellite messaging capabilities. This is what happened.

The brilliance wasn’t working well

As reported by KDVR (via Reddit), the 53-year-old man just held back Snowmass Mountain on Sunday and then began his descent using his sparkle technique (which essentially slides down snowy slopes). That’s when he realizes that he has injured his wrist and cannot make it himself.

Without cell phone service, he contacted the family using Apple’s emergency SOS via satellite messaging system. The family warned authorities.

Emergency dispatchers received the report around 8:25am Monday, with Mountain Rescue Aspen deployed at Snowmass Lake, according to officials with the Pitkin County Sheriff’s Office.

A team of 17 rescuers assisted and ultimately evacuated injured climbers at an altitude of 10,980 feet and over eight miles from the nearest trailhead.

As KDVR Pay attention

“The rescue team and the sheriff’s office said that carrying emergency equipment and knowing how to use Apple Satellite Texting can accelerate rescue. The SOS button can be used to enable rescue teams to establish direct communication.”
