Most US iPhones are made in India as Apple handles tariffs

Most US iPhones are made in India, not China, as Apple is rebooting its supply chain to avoid tariffs on products imported from China.

This strategy certainly will be a significant help for Apple at the moment, but there are two reasons why this proves to be just a temporary solution…

Apple is approaching its long-term goal

While most iPhones are still assembled in China, Apple has been working to increase the number of phones made in other countries for many years. India is the company’s secondary manufacturing hub, and Apple reportedly aims to achieve 50% of iPhone production within the next few years.

An important milestone is to start manufacturing the latest iPhone lineup on the same date in both India and China. Apple wanted to do that on the iPhone 16, but not very When the Indian rally begins a few weeks later, you can pull it apart. This appears to occur on the iPhone 17.

The company’s previous motivation has reduced manufacturing reliance on China, but changes in production are now paying a large dividend in light of tariffs on Chinese-made goods imported into the US.

Currently, most US iPhones are made in India

Bloomberg It reports that the majority of iPhones for the US market are now made in India rather than China.

India currently accounts for more than a fifth of the world’s iPhone production, already surpassing China to make it the top supplier of devices in the US market.

However, there are two problems

Apple’s first challenge is a huge surge in demand when launching a new iPhone lineup. It is highly unlikely that all US demand for the iPhone 17 from India’s production alone can be met.

Second, rest from import duties can be temporary. Trump has imposed a 25% tariff on goods imported from India, and is currently exempt, but it will not last.

In April, the Trump administration was given a large reprieve to companies such as Apple (…) Trump, exempting smartphones, computers and other electronic devices from mutual tariffs. After announcing the shock tariffs, he later added that the US and India are still in talks.

Apple has been a hit with import duties so far, but it is unlikely to do so in the long run, so prices for Apple products sold in the US could rise in the future.
