iPad fold with 18.8 inch display
The device report dates back to 2022. Display analyst Ross Young said he saw signs of a folding of about 20 inches in Apple’s supply chain. Given the timing, this probably refers to the supplier being asked for estimates rather than production plans.
At the time it was not clear whether the device was an iPad and a MacBook, but Young initially proposed the latter. Apple has long been working on the ultimate goal of a MacBook with a touch-screen keyboard that can pass the three tests required for a virtual device. Fellow analyst Ming-Chi Kuo thought the same thing when he found evidence of a large folding display in his supply chain.
However, subsequent reports were combined on devices that were iPads rather than MacBooks. Both analysts also said that the diagonal screen size is 18.8 inches or 18.76 inches, to be precise.
Conflict Reports on Release Dates
Both Kuo and Young initially expected the device to be released in the second half of 2026. Bloomberg’s Mark Garman said he arrived in 2028 and will be well later.
Gurman supports the idea that it’s an iPad rather than a MacBook, but suggests that it can run some Mac apps. But that’s simply because he expects this to be true for all iPads so far.
I don’t think it’ll be a true iPad-Mac hybrid, but the device will have both elements. By 2028, iPads need to be advanced enough to run MacOS apps.
