Redundant iTunes movies and TV show apps can be hidden from your Apple TV home screen

The iTunes movies and TV shows app is in front of the Unified Apple TV app and will return to the first version of TVOS in 2015. Fast forward to today. These apps are almost completely redundant and act as just placeholders.

Because Apple TV system apps cannot be deleted, these past shells are somewhat comically packed into the home screen of Apple TV. With the latest beta version of TVOS 26, users will ultimately have a way to fill these apps forever.

Until now, the only workaround to keep these useless apps out of sight was to create a folder at the bottom of the home screen and place it there.

With TVOS 26 Beta 6 released earlier this week, users can hide these apps completely from the home screen.

After updating to the latest version of TVOS, here’s how to do this:

  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Scroll down and select an app.
  3. Choose an iTunes movie or TV show.
  4. Locate the Home Screen section.
  5. Click each row once to hide it from the show.

The app icon will disappear from the home screen of your Apple TV.

This interface allows you to hide both iTunes movies and iTunes TV shows, or just one of them.

Currently they still appear by default. But we can imagine Apple deploying a heuristic that automatically hides new users in the future. Also, for existing users who probably don’t have items on their wishlist, these apps are basically the only feature they currently have.

Another new app that you will see when upgrading to TVOS 26 is Apple Music Sing. This is essentially a shortcut to a dedicated karaoke section within the music app. If you don’t plan to use the Karaoke feature on your Apple TV, you can also hide Settings -> Apps -> Music and songs from the Home screen.
