Apple announced that it will release a software update for iPhone and Apple Watch later today with its “redesigned blood oxygen feature” for US Apple Watch users. This has been more than 18 months since Apple began selling Apple Watch without using American blood oxygen capabilities due to patent disputes.

New features will be available as part of iOS 18.6.1 and Watchos 11.6.1 updates.

In a statement shopestore Today, an Apple spokesperson said:

“Apple will introduce a redesigned blood oxygen feature for some Apple Watch users in the US via an iPhone and Apple Watch software update. This update will measure and calculate the sensor data of the Apple Watch blood oxygen app on a pair of iPhones. Features.”

As a refresher, Apple is caught up in a legal battle with health technology company Masimo over patents related to Apple Watch’s blood oxygen function. The situation escalated when the import ban began in December 2023, banning Apple from selling Apple Watch models with US blood oxygen capabilities

Apple has stopped selling Apple Watches in the US for several days due to import bans. On January 18, 2024, Apple began selling the Apple Watch Series 9 and Apple Watch Ultra 2.

That has been the case ever since. Apple introduced the new Apple Watch Series 10 last September, but it also lacks American blood oxygen function. In the meantime, Masimo and Apple have been keeping things going in court.

iOS 18.6.1 and Watchos 11.6.1 arrive today

Apple says it will release iOS 18.6.1 and Watchos 11.6.1 later today to introduce “redesigned blood oxygen capabilities” to Apple Watch users in the US. The company says the update will be available to US Apple Watch Series 10, Series 9 and Ultra 2 users who do not have the original blood oxygen function.

Updating to iOS 18.6.1 and Watchos 11.6.1, Apple Watch will also download over the air assets for new blood oxygen functions. This can take up to 24 hours. You can open the ECG app on your Apple Watch or the Health app on your iPhone to start the download.

This update is specifically applied to Apple Watch models purchased in the US, with part numbers ending with LW/A. You can find the part number by visiting the Settings app on your Apple Watch, tapping a general tap and then tapping. It is also available in the Apple Watch app for the iPhone below, which is a typical one.

How does the redesigned blood oxygen function work on the Apple Watch Series 10, Series 9, and Ultra 2?

You can start a session with the Apple Watch blood oxygen app, and your Apple Watch sensors collect the data you need. The iPhone then uses that data to calculate blood oxygen measurements. The results can be viewed in the breathing section of the health app on your iPhone. You cannot view results on the Apple Watch itself.

A redesigned version of the feature also supports background blood oxygen measurements. This means that your Apple Watch can collect data in the background and pass it to your iPhone for calculations.

Finally, Apple states that “they have no impact on previous purchases of Apple Watch units, including original blood oxygen functions, or Apple Watch units purchased outside the US.”

Apple has nothing to share when the redesigned blood oxygen function will be available on Watchos 26 and iOS 26 Betas.

Apple explains that the move came after Apple ruled that it could potentially import Apple Watch models with this new software design of blood oxygen functionality. The company also continues to appeal its first ITC decision, which it believes should be reversed by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit.
