EERO OUTDOOR 7 Review: Introduction

At the end of last year, Eero, owned by Amazon, after years of users who requested one, finally removed the covers of a dedicated external device, designed to extend its Wi-Fi mesh network to its garden … so there is no more need to store a regular interior eero in a weather-proof box.

Eero Outdoor 7, as you will have guessed by the name, is an Eero Ero enabled for Wi-Fi 7, designed to join the tastes of Eero 7, Max 7 or Pro 7.

However, this is Eero, of course, it is compatible with Eero’s routers and satellites, including the excellent pro 6E and 6+.

It is fed by Power Over Ethernet (POE), so, if you can execute an Ethernet cable to the outdoor space to which you want to extend your Wi-Fi coverage, you will not only have an easy way to turn on the outdoor 7, but also connect to the door of Eero Poe or another Eero satellite through a POE injector injector, therefore, totaling its total, its total, its total of its total.

Wi-Fi 7, in case I did not know, is a change of step in characteristics and performance, which makes it much more appropriate for increasingly fast Internet speeds and the growing number of devices connected to domestic networks; We are told that Eero Outdoor 7 can handle 200 devices.

There are almost no Wi-Fi 7 devices at this time, but investing in a system will now test its domestic network in the coming years.

It is not cheap at $ 349.99, but it is the response to many Wi-Fi prayers outdoors of Eero users (including their own).

Keep reading to get my complete review of Eero Outdoor 7.

Design and configuration

  • Resistant design
  • IP66 Sample proba
  • Ethernet cable fed

Eero never deviates too far from the plan when it comes to design and the outdoor 7 looks more or less as expected: white, rectangular, minimalist.

However, it differs from the new Eero 7 or the Eero Pro 6E, since the exterior is not a bright plastic, but is sandy metallic material, and feels much heavier than its inner brothers and is also larger, at 6.34 x 8.18 x 2.54 inches.

Turn the outdoor 7 and you will find a groove where you can easily slide it through the assembly support that goes up to the box.

Also in the box you will obtain assembly accessories for stucco walls, vinyl, wood or cement fiber and a step -by -step guide for easy installation. So, wherever I want to mount it, it should be quite easy.

I rode mine in a wooden shed and took less than 5 minutes. Eero states that mounting the 6-15 feet outer satellite on the ground.

Wherever you decide to mount it, be sure to think about how it will turn it on. In the lower part there is a single Ethernet port, and that is its only option to obtain energy abroad 7.

You can use the Poe adapter you get in the box for only energy and, in this case, you will need an outdoor energy plug to connect the other end.

In this way, it will use the Eero Outdoor 7 as a regular wireless Wi-Fi mesh node, so it will want a regular interior eero, within the range, to obtain a stable connection. As with adding any new Eero node to the mixture, you will do a placement test during the configuration, and it will be warned if the signal is not good enough.

If you want a cable backhaul, you must run an Ethernet cable (Cat 5A or better) from the Eero Poe gateway, or involve a Poe injector.

That Ethernet port, by the way, is 2.5gbe, and Eero states that it can deliver wireless speeds of up to 2.1 Gbps. It is a shame that is not 10gbe, since that would mean the fastest possible connection with Eero Gateway or a Max 7, but 2.5gbe is still quick enough for the predictable future.

There is, and this is a bit kicking for me, only the only port. Then you can’t Daisy Chain Two Eero Outdoor 7 satellites. The thought here is, I suppose, you would have an additional port to stay clean and dry if it was not used, but it seems a lost opportunity.

However, you can get two 7 outdoors that work together as a wireless bridge point to point. If they are separated up to 1,000 feet away with a clear line of vision between them, you should not see much abandon at all.

The POE cable in the box also has a M22 label gland, a polytetrafluoroethylene polymer seal (EPTFE) that blocks water entry, but allows the condensation and hot air to escape.

If you are running a cable outward, you will be pleased to know that this waterproof protector falls apart, so you will not have to pierce a massive hole. If you are using Poe and an Ethernet Cat5/6 cable, this part also emerges and will carefully squeeze its RJ45 connector through the hole.

Also in the lower part there is a thread to screw an earth cable, which is obviously useful if it lives in an area with frequent lighting storms, or its grid receives regular waves.

The exterior 7 is classified in IP66, so it can handle any launched element, with a operating temperature range of -40F to 130F. Eero tells us that you can leave outside throughout the year, whatever the weather.

Characteristics and application

  • Excellent Eero application
  • Premium characteristics cost more
  • Smart Household Skills

Whatever the food mode you are looking for, and in any way that mount it, the initial matches for the exterior 7 is quite identical to any other Eero device and the Eero application speaks it through the process and also guides it through the physical installation (which it should obviously do, once it knows that everything works well and synchronizes with its Eero network).

Management through the Eero application, the Eero Outdoor 7 is completely controlled through the cloud without local web interface. That means there is no advanced configuration, such as the option to change network channels or separate the 2.4 and 5GHz networks; Although 5GHz can disable in Eero temporarily if you have problems adding new devices to the network.

The fact that there is an option to divide the networks into individual bands is not really a problem, especially the MLO technology of Wi-Fi 7.

The Eero application provides an excellent description of which devices are connected to which satellites and what is happening in its Eero network.

It is also the place that will go to verify the status of your network, restart devices, create profiles, change the configuration, etc.

The 7 outdoor is also a matter controller with built -in subprocess edge rings, and there is also Zigbee on board for direct communication with sizes such as Hue Smart Bulbs.

However, and this is always the biggest complaint with Eero, it must cough more to go beyond basic web functionality; Eero Plus currently costs $ 99.99 / £ 99.99 per year.

Free, you can still create user profiles and assign devices to each person, programming when they can and cannot access the Internet.

Eero Plus adds things such as advertisement block, web filtering, historical data and applications blocking, and subscriptions to some additional software such as malware bytes, 1Password and VPN fed by Guardian.

It also obtains a smart Internet backup function, where you can designate a second Wi-Fi network so that the Eero system connects, if your Wi-Fi decreases.

Performance

The Outdoor 7 has all the characteristics of Eero that you would expect, such as the Truecannel and Truareroam capabilities and we are told to provide 15,000 square feet of coverage.

That is an infernal lot more than a normal Eero node, including the Max 7 Eero of Superior Puppy exceeds 2,500 square feet of coverage per unit.

But that is because we are talking about outdoor coverage. There are no walls to pass and much less interference.

And that is why Eero, I suspect, has not bothered with a radius of 6 GHz in the outdoor 7.

As for the transmissions, it has a pair of double -band radios; 2 × 2 2.4GHz and 2 × 2 5GHz, providing up to 2.1gbit/s of Wi-Fi performance. Not that you think of Wi-Fi 7 as individual spectrum blocks.

Thanks to the multiple link operation (MLO), Wi-Fi 7 devices can connect at multiple frequencies at the same time to improve speeds. That is the real key for speed improvements that Wi-Fi 7 promises.

The design and use of an antenna from Outdoor 7, therefore, focuses on maximizing the range and coverage, not reaching maximum speeds of 6GHz, which are inherently short -range.

It is also important to remember that currently, only a limited number of devices admits 6GHz Wi-Fi 7.

Being Eero, everything is compatible backwards, you can obtain the 7 outdoor modules singing and dancing with your existing eero kit (although obviously it will lose some characteristics and speed if you mix and combine with previous generations).

For example, one of the benefits of Wi-Fi 7 is that you can use 320MHz channels, which is 160MHz in Wi-Fi 6/6E. If you mix and combine with older Eero devices, and you will not get this option.

I have been testing the Eero Outdoor 7 with a ‘1gig’ contract with my ISP.

Although the maximum theoretical speed of 1,130 Mbps cannot really be achieved, I have become accustomed to Wi-Fi speeds inside my house more than 750 Mbps through several Pro 7 and 6ES, all connected directly to an Eero Poe gate. (My Xbox is connected to my gateway and gives me a 928mbps result in the speed test).

Before configuring outside 7, I had been using an Eero Poe 6 in my garden, connected to the Ethernet gateway, inside a weather resistant box and was obtaining speeds between 500 and 550Mbps.

In the same neighborhood, I now get 700-800MPBS out of the outdoor 7; and around 450-500mbps at the other end of the garden (about 150 feet). I even managed speeds of more than 400 Mbps within my office, which is about 170 feet away from the outdoor 7.

That is with the outdoor Eero 7 directly connected to the Ethernet gateway. When I tried the Wi-Fi connection, the closest node was a 6E pro 6E to 30 feet away in the kitchen, with a site line through some glass doors, it was obtaining more than 450 Mbps at the closest point, 350MPBs at the end of the garden and 300mbps in the office.

My path is the property of the corner and walked at 500 feet through the dead end that runs parallel to my garden and I could still get a solid connection of 200 Mbps.

Long short history … is fast and is powerful.

Final thoughts

The outdoor 7 solves a long -standing problem for Eero users. Its robust and weather resistant capabilities and Wi-Fi 7 capabilities provide an impressive range and speed, especially with a cable backhaul and, although it is not cheap, and the single Ethernet port is a limitation, the easy configuration, the characteristics of the smart home and the integration of Eero without interruptions make it a very welcome addition to the eero mixture.

How do we try

When we publish our reviews, they may be sure they are the result of “living” with long -term tests.

Start Wi-Fi devices play a key role in control, an intelligent home ecosystem or a range of products that supposedly work in harmony.

Because we are testing the smart house kit all day, every day, we know what matters and how a particular intelligent controller compares with the alternatives that could also be considering.

Our reviews are integral, objective and fair and, of course, we are never paid directly to check a device.

Read our guide on how we try to learn more.

Frequent questions

Does Eero Outdoor 7 require a specific Eero router for it to work?

No, Eero Outdoor 7 is compatible with all Eero routers and satellites. However, to make the most of the functions of Wi-Fi 7, it is better combined with other Wi-Fi 7 devices such as Eero 7, Max 7 or Pro 7. The oldest Eero devices will continue to function, but can limit some of the newest features.

Can I use the Outdoor 7 eero without power over Ethernet (POE)?

Yes, you can use the Poe adapter included only for power. In this configuration, you will need an outdoor outlet. However, the use of Poe directly from the Eero Poe gate or an Poe injector allows a cable network, which often provides a more stable and faster connection.

Can I get multiple units of Eero Outdoor 7 of the chain with Ethernet?

No, the Eero Outdoor 7 has only an Ethernet port, so the Margarita chain through Ethernet is not possible. However, you can use two outdoor units such as a point-to-point wireless bridge for the long-range Wi-Fi extension.

Does Eero Outdoor 7 have 6 GHz?

No, it is a double band device.
