Alexa’s voice recordings will now reach the cloud
Amazon is closing a characteristic centered in privacy that allowed some devices to process the requests of Alexa locally, instead of sending them to the cloud.
According to an email sent to users and then shared in Reddit, this change will enter into force on March 28, 28.
Amazon confirmed the change to the edge, with spokeswoman Lauren Raemhild declaring:
“Alexa’s experience is designed to protect the privacy of our clients and maintain their safe data, and that is not changing.
Of course, it could be a coincidence, but the closing date is almost at the same time that Alexa Plus from Amazon Aizon Aizon lands for users in the United States.
The email establishes: “As we continue to expand Alexa’s capabilities with generative characteristics of AI that depend on the processing power of the safe cloud of Amazon, we have decided not to admit this characteristic.”
However, not everything is pessimism for the conscious of security; While they will no longer have the option to prevent voice recordings from reaching Amazon servers, they can still choose to eliminate them after processing.
If you currently have the “Do not send voice recordings” enabled, you will automatically change you “do not save recordings”.
That means that Alexa will continue to send your requests to the cloud for processing, but the recordings will not be stored later.
The local processing function itself was relatively niche anyway; It was only available on three devices echo, the last Dot Echo Dot, Echo Show 10 or Echo Show 15.
