Apple will reportedly release a foldable iPad in 2028 that could run macOS apps
Apple is aiming to launch its first foldable device in 2028, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Garman. Garman describes it as “similar to a giant iPad that when unfolded is the size of two iPad Pros.”
Rumors about Apple’s foldable devices have been on and off for years, but bloombergApple is finally starting to focus on one product that will be released within a few years.
The report also states that Apple wants to avoid wrinkles in its devices, making it a big focus during development. The crease is barely visible at the moment, but Apple hasn’t completely removed it yet.
A prototype of this new product within Apple’s Industrial Design Group has nearly invisible creases. But it’s too early to tell if Apple can completely eliminate it. When Samsung Electronics launched its first foldable phone five years ago, it tried unsuccessfully to eliminate the crease.
This display is said to be about 20 inches when expanded. Garman describes it as “a single uninterrupted piece of glass.” Also referred to as a “high-end device.”
Apple seems to be focusing its folding strategy on creating a much larger screen that fits in a backpack, rather than offering a tablet experience that’s not ideal for your pocket.
When referring to the operating system, Garman suggests that the product will likely run a version of iPadOS. However, there is one interesting detail here.
I don’t believe it will be a true iPad/Mac hybrid, but the device will have elements of both. By the time 2028 rolls around, iPadOS should be advanced enough to run macOS apps…
It’s unclear whether this is just speculation on Gurman’s part, but the possibility of running Mac apps on this foldable iPad (and other iPads as well) is very exciting.
As for a foldable iPhone, the company is considering the idea, but it might not arrive until 2026 at the earliest.
