Apple Watch users regularly credit devices for helping to save lives during health fears and emergencies. But for the founder of Whole Foods, it was insights from the Apple Watch that helped him improve his life.

Business Insider this week highlighted that Whole Foods founder John Mackey decided to abandon his drinking three years ago, thanks to data collected by the Apple Watch.

“I wish I had stopped drinking 30 years ago,” Mackie said. “That’s the feeling I’ve had for 30 years to let go of the past.”

Mackie said his Apple Watch contributed to his decision to cut off alcohol from his life forever.

“I was tracking my sleep, but I couldn’t sleep well for days. “So I asked, ‘Well, what did I do differently when I didn’t sleep well?” I’ve started. ”

Looking back at sleep tracking and habits using the Apple Watch, Mackey decided that reducing exercise before bed and eating large-scale food means better sleep. However, according to the Apple Watch, the biggest insight was due to a deep lack of sleep.

Mackie also shared his experiences in an interview with the Plantstrong podcast last year. MacKey named Autos Sleep as the app he used to track sleep. In his own words:

“It (the Apple Watch) changed my life. I got off alcohol over two years ago.” (…) “Well, there’s an app on the Apple Watch called Autos Sleep, which tracks my sleep.

I sleep on the clock and charge the morning I wake up.

And I learned a lot from it. Because it tells me not only how long I am sleeping, but also how quality of my sleep is and how deep my sleep is. And whenever I drank a beer or even a glass of wine, I began to notice that I had zero deep sleep. I don’t give me a deep sleep and my total sleep drops about an hour.

And I actually like alcohol and didn’t want to give up on it, so I did a lot of experiments. However, the facts were very clear. Every time I drink, I don’t have a deep sleep. And I started to realize, wow, maybe I should just stop drinking.

So the question is, do I want to sleep well or have a drink? And the answer for over two years so far is that I would rather sleep well. But there may be times when I want a drink, but so far it may not have hit me. ”

Better sleep means a better life, and for the founder of Whole Foods, sleep tracking using the Apple Watch undoubtedly unleashed important insights that provided answers on how to improve him.

Sleep Tracking is now a built-in feature on the Apple Watch. The Apple Watch Series 9, Apple Watch Series 10, and Apple Watch Ultra 2 can also detect signs of sleep apnea.
