Apple may be eyeing the smart doorbell market, with a report suggesting that a Face ID-enabled camera is on the horizon that could unlock your door simply by recognizing your face.

That’s according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, a highly respected insider who is also the man fueling rumors about Apple’s smart home hub and security cameras.

According to Gurman, the video doorbell, like the hub and camera, will be released next year. Although their report states that it is still in the early stages of development and is not expected to launch before the end of 2025.

It’s not too hard to imagine that if Apple wanted to step up its smart home efforts, then a video doorbell could be in the cards.

After all, the Cupertino tech giant already has Face ID technology in widespread use.

The doorbell is supposed to scan a resident’s face as they approach and then connect wirelessly to a deadbolt to automatically unlock the door.

Leveraging Apple’s Secure Enclave chip, the system would process Face ID data separately from the main hardware, like other Apple biometric technologies.

The report suggests that this smart doorbell can integrate with third-party HomeKit-compatible smart locks, but Apple could also partner with a brand to offer a complete package at launch.

It is also rumored to include Apple’s upcoming “Proxima” Wi-Fi/Bluetooth chip, which is expected to debut in the new HomePod Mini and Apple TV devices.

This move would be part of Apple’s broader push into the smart home space, reportedly centered around an Apple Intelligence ecosystem.

Other rumored products include an Apple-branded TV, new smart home cameras, and the hub I mentioned, which will include displays; one with a magnetic design that can be mounted on the wall and another connected to a robotic arm to improve its functionality.

While a doorbell with Face ID could rival products like Amazon’s Ring, it also introduces new risks. As Gurman points out, any potential security vulnerability could trigger a significant backlash if the system were linked to home burglaries.
