Apple is redesigning the Magic Mouse: Here’s what we know so far

mark garman bloomberg We recently reported that Apple is redesigning the Magic Mouse for the first time since its launch in 2009. Over the mouse’s 15-year history, the design has remained largely unchanged except for switching from AA batteries to Lightning in 2015. USB-C in 2024.

But that will soon change.

Charging port placement

One of the biggest criticisms of the Magic Mouse is the charging port. You have to plug it in from the bottom to charge it. This also means that you can’t use your computer while your mouse needs charging.

Some Magic Mouse advocates say this is better for battery health, but others say it doesn’t matter because realistically you only need to charge it every six weeks. There may be a concept of points, but it’s still annoying.

Nevertheless, Gurman reports that this will change with the next generation Magic Mouse.

Apple is trying to create something more relevant while addressing long-standing complaints, including the charging port issue.

Therefore, in the near future this will no longer be a concern.

ergonomics

There’s no concrete information on what the new Magic Mouse will actually be other than the fact that it will be completely reimagined and hopefully have improved ergonomics. Apple is aiming to create a better-fitting mouse, perhaps one similar to the MX Master.

The good news is that a new Magic Mouse is in the works. We hear that Apple’s design team has been prototyping accessories in recent months, with the aim of coming up with something that better fits the modern era.

In a computing world of touch screens, voice commands, and hand gestures, the mouse is less important than it once was.

Many Mac users enjoy Logitech’s MX Master mouse because of its ergonomics and additional features, but some of the multi-touch gestures that Magic Mouse offers are not available. It would be great if Apple could offer the best of both worlds.

release date

The new Magic Mouse is in the early stages of development and probably won’t be released until sometime in 2026. “I don’t expect anything for the next 12 to 18 months,” Garman said. Apple is also working on a redesigned MacBook Pro with OLED in 2026, and the two could debut together.
