Ring adds 2K video resolution in surprise software update
Software updates for security cameras usually fix bugs or occasionally introduce new features, but Ring has surprised us all with a major improvement in image quality.
Two of its existing models, the Ring Floodlight Cam Wired Pro and Ring Spotlight Cam Pro, are now getting a bump in resolution.
Originally released in Full HD (1080p) resolution, both cameras are now capable of recording in 2K resolution, thanks to a free update released earlier this week.
This update improves the clarity and detail of recorded footage at no additional cost to existing users. This 2K upscaling is not limited to newly purchased devices, it is available to all current owners of these camera models.
While Ring hasn’t provided extensive technical details, it must have meant that the cameras’ hardware already supported a higher resolution, but was limited to 1080p.
Following the update, the Ring app now includes a new video quality option, allowing users to toggle between 1080p and 2K settings.
The upgraded 2K footage is powered by Ring Vision technology, which uses a combination of hardware and software improvements. This includes features like motion smoothing and optimized color and contrast for better overall video quality.
In addition to the increase in resolution, some Ring camera models also incorporate vehicle detection as a new feature. This improvement is in addition to People Detection as part of the brand’s smart detection offerings. However, this feature requires an active Ring Home subscription plan to work.
Ring also had some news in Las Vegas at CES, where it was announced that it had partnered with fire safety brand Kidde to incorporate smoke and CO2 alarms within the Ring app.
The Kidde Smart Ring Smoke Detector and the Kidde Smart Ring Smoke and CO Detector were showcased at the big tech expo and will go on sale in April.
Ring is also launching a $5 monthly subscription service along with the alarms, offering 24/7 professional monitoring and access to emergency dispatchers.
However, subscription is optional and users can still take advantage of the smoke alarm’s core functionality without additional charges, such as being alerted via notifications if an alarm is triggered.
