Apple TV+ finally has a big chance to get off the ground with Severance. The reason is as follows
Apple TV+ is on the brink of a potential big cultural moment, and Severance Season 2 generated a buzz that few Apple shows have had before. This is why TV+ could really take off like never before.
Severance Season 2 Could Be Apple TV+’s Next Ted Lasso Moment
Apple’s marketing team is having fun this week, as evidenced by the appearance of “Lumon employees” at New York City’s Grand Central Terminal.
It’s clear the company is looking to take advantage of the unique opportunity that Severance’s return presents.
Not only did the first season of the show receive a huge following, but the long wait between seasons and great critical reviews also gave Severance’s debut a lot of buzz.
It’s a buzz you don’t often get on Apple TV+.
The streamer has been around for more than five years, but it’s still struggling to gain cultural traction. Ted Lasso was the first big exception to truly “breakthrough”, and it looks like Severance could be the second.
But this success may actually stick.
Apple’s enhanced catalog now helps you retain your audience instead of alienating them
Ever since Apple TV+ first came out, one of its biggest perceived flaws has been the lack of a catalog.
Essentially every other streaming service, in addition to producing originals, licenses content that can fill their libraries.
Apple went in a different direction by focusing all its efforts on original work, which made it difficult to retain subscribers for a long time.
Ted Lasso was a real hit, not just for Apple, but for every streaming service out there. The problem was that even though Apple had a lot of subscribers, there wasn’t much else to keep them.
Even after Lasso’s operations ended in spring 2023, Apple TV+ was still somewhat neglected when it came to engaging content that would encourage continued subscriptions.
But in the nearly two years since then, Apple TV+’s library has grown significantly. It’s also popular for new and returning shows.
New content on Apple TV+ is doing particularly well
Users who subscribe to Apple TV+ to follow Mark S and crew’s latest Severance adventures will also enjoy tons of other Apple content.
Here are some of the highlights that have been added to Apple TV+ since the third season of Ted Lasso ended, Apple’s last big cultural moment.
In other words, if Season 2 of Severance is indeed a Ted Lasso-level hit, Apple will likely have more content to keep subscribers around after the season ends.
Maybe, just maybe, Apple TV+ can finally achieve the huge success that quality content like Severance deserves.
