Review: Astropad Rock Paper Pencil V2, Pen-on Paper iPad upgrade even better

Last year, Astrophad launched an impressive lock paper pencil kit for the iPad. This provided a reusable/removable matte screen protector and a ballpoint style apple pencil tip for a real pen paper experience. This year, the company delivered the V2 lock paper pencil with nano-kling boundaries, flat profiles, and apple pencil tips. After testing the improved version, this is what I think.

Updated 8/23/24: Astrophad offers 15% off lock paper pencils today as a return to school promotion.

The Rock Paper Pencil was one of my favorite apple accessories of 2023 (full review). For $39, it provided a matte screen protector for iPad, giving it a very realistic pen-on-paper feel with some other great benefits, including instant apps and removal, foam, and ball point style apple pencil tips.

Despite creating a great product with a rock paper pencil, Astrophad took user feedback and quickly implemented two major improvements in the second generation.

Rock Paper Pencil V2 Upgrade

  • Nano Cling Border Attachment
    • Stronger than a magnet
    • Easy to remove, reusable, non-adhesive and no residue
    • Fully flat profile – 40% thinner than the magnetic boundary of V1
  • Stronger and finer apple pencil tip
    • Copper alloy core with palladium coating
    • Wide internal anchors for sturdy
    • 0.7mm Accuracy Ball Point Tip – 30% Fineer than V1
    • Includes two tips
  • Price: $39.99

Like the V1, the V2 includes a protective sleeve to store screen protectors and is compatible with the 12.9-inch iPad Pro 3rd Gen and then the 11-inch iPad Pro or Modern iPad Air, iPad Mini 6th Gen, 10.9-inch iPad 10th Gen, or iPad 10.2-inch 7, 8th, or 8th Gen.

in use

Like the first lock paper pencil screen protector, the V2 is very easy to install and remove. The original magnetic attachment is installed a little faster, but the V2’s nanocling is a valuable upgrade as it is easier to adjust, has more lasting power, and the screen protector becomes ultra-thin and flattered (the magnetic version has raised the edges).

For my use, the Lock Paper Pencil V2 Screen Protector with a Lock Paper Pencil provides the same amazing pen paper feel as the V1, and is reinforced with an Apple Pencil Tip with a 30% finer 0.7mm Ball Point Style, Apple Pencil Tip.

As shown above, there is a 0.7mm tip of the V2 on the left and a lesser V1 tip of the 1.0mm V1 on the right.

Like previous builds of Astrophad, the new lock paper pencil protector does not cause any issues with the iPad’s touchscreen responsiveness. I tapped, swipe, etc. with my finger and checked how the iPad felt with the protector when it was turned off when it was swipe.

Rock Paper Pencil V2 Conclusion

Listen to user feedback, move quickly and launch the V2 with the nanokling attachment and the tip of a 0.7mm apple pencil, keeping the price at $5 cheaper.

If you want to feel pen-on paper on your iPad and Apple Pencil, as you felt after using the V1, I highly recommend the Rock Paper Pencil V2. Incidentally, the side of the removable matte screen protector is worth the price.

As experienced in the original review, this product offers a great tactile experience, has a smooth design that can be removable at any time, offers an anti-glare finish, and upgrades your Apple Pencil (Gen 2) with more durable, accurate tips.

If you already have a Rock Paper Pencil V1, you’re probably getting a large portion of the same experience with the V2. Unless you really need a 0.7mm fine tip and nanocling attachment.
